13 ~ Current Project: Gormenghast

2010
Graduation/ Integrated Project
Stage 4 Diploma Theatre Costume

Charming and malevolent, a young kitchen boy named Steerpike escapes the sweltering kitchens of the ancient Castle Gormenghast, and begins his muderous ascent to power. He captures the attention of Lady Fuchsia, daughter of Lord Groan, and begins his pursuit of her ladyship and a fateful seduction of the castle occupants.

Gormenghast based on a trilogy written by Mervyn Peake, was adapted for television by the BBC and released in 2000. This series has inspired me with its quirky interpretation of period costume, incorporating many elements from throughout fashion history. This has allowed me to use the techniques and skills learnt within the Diploma of Costume, and develop new ones. With such strong and memorable characterisation, Gormenghast has afforded me endless opportunity for creativity.

The following are in progress photos from my project, as will be updated as I work through my completion date in August.

I will be costuming the final outfits of Steerpike & Lady Fuchsia
